My Spirit has been recoiling lately enough that I’ve paid attention to what it is about. You know when you just get that little nudge in your soul that just doesn’t sit well. Something is off, something is wrong, something is causing harm. Time to check myself.
Time to walk humbly with God and seek His guidance before He must humble me publically.
Here is what came pouring out of me when I scribbled a note to myself (so I wouldn’t forget later what it was all about).
“When I speak of my opponents and enemies, would Jesus be proud that I call myself a Christian? Am I representing Him well to my children and others around me? Am I leading by example – what kind of example am I setting? Ambassadorship.”
I hope that this also just sent a check into your spirit.
My husband had some PBS show on last night that I just caught a few minutes of…it was speaking of the closing scene of our nation’s Civil War. It spoke of humility in the face of victory. It spoke of compassion for one’s enemy (brother). It was saturated in the hope of restoration. Men acting in honor. Men doing what was best for our country. Men accepting defeat and moving forward with purpose and dignity.
Oh how this is my prayer for our country.
Beloved, regardless of what political front you stand behind, your actions, words, emotions, intents, and choices must first reflect the Savior for whom you are an Ambassador. (guilty as charged) Our enemy is not the opposing party. We are fighting a spiritual battle – our enemy is Satan himself. As God’s warriors, we must walk as Jesus walked. We must hope as Jesus hoped. We must talk as He talked. Let our yes be yes and our no be no. Overcome evil with good. Do not allow bitterness, slander, malice, deceit, selfish ambition, greed, pride, arrogance, falsehoods, etc. flow freely from you.
The New Life
Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. But that is not the way you learned Christ!—assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil. Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. (Ephesians 4:17-32 ESV)
Take a minute and read this passage out loud. God has called us to be set apart. Different from the world. Involved but not assimilated. We are not here to save America. We are here to share the good news of Jesus Christ and the salvation He brings to save souls. Maybe the reason we are all so confused as to what to do this fall in the voting booth is because we are focused on the wrong purpose. When you vote, I hope that you will have done your duty to be properly informed and that you choose the candidate that best supports and protects God’s people and His will.
That is the best we can do in the booth. But when you walk out of that booth, I pray that you will have put on God’s love, His armor, and taken up His word as your sword to go to battle with Satan for this country and its residence. We have much work to do for God. Let us not allow this political season to take our focus off of serving God. May each of us serve as a good and faithful servant – walking true to the ambassadorship that we claim – a follower of Jesus Christ.
Speak boldly for Jesus. Stand firm in your faith. Give grace as you have received it. Lead by example with love and truth. Be encouraged. Press on!
