Searching: Is God Real – The Beginning of the Christian Faith

That is the sort answer.  The next question should be, “Now what must I do about it?”

If God is real and if the Bible is truly the inerrant Word of God, the consequences of not paying attention to what God has to say can be eternally devastating.

The Christian gospel message is that people are born sinful (every single one of us), we cannot be good enough to earn God’s favor and undo this natural sin state.  We have only one choice to make that will affect our eternity.  God is loving and just and has provided a solution to our sin problem.  God sent His only Son Jesus Christ to give His live as the final sacrifice to pay for all sin – everyone’s sin – for all time – past present and future.  Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross, was in the tomb for three days, and then rose again to new life.  He is now in heaven at God’s right hand.  We can receive the perfection and forgiveness of Jesus as full payment for our sin nature.  Jesus takes my sin and I take His salvation.

We believe that God’s inerrant Word states that in order to spend eternal life in heaven with God, one must accept the salvation that Jesus offers by faith alone through grace alone.  Once we have confessed that we are sinners and have accepted and stated our belief that Jesus is God’s only Son, sent to die for us, we are given the right to be called children of God.  We are adopted into God’s eternal family and saved from an eternity in hell.  And we are sealed with God’s Holy Spirit to help us live a life that pleases God.

After you accept Jesus as your personal Savior and the Lord of your life, you need to walk in this new life and stop doing what you want to do that is against God’s Word.  The first step is to start learning what God’s Word says, so that you can follow it.  Generally this means that you need to get a copy of a good translation of the Bible.  New American Standard, English Standard Version, Life Application Bible, New International Version, King James Version, there are many different translations.  The original text of God’s Word was written in Aramaic, Hebrew, and Greek.  And you must find a good church that teaches the Bible in their sermons and that offers classes throughout the week.

All churches are not created equally.  There are different denominations that hold to different understandings of what the Word of God means.  This can be very difficult for a new Christian to navigate.  One suggestion I have is that you find a Christian who seems to be knowledgeable and living according to God’s ways and ask them to recommend a church to you.  I obviously have my opinion as to which denominations I feel are solid theologically and doctrinally, but I also believe that when you seek God’s guidance that He will direct your path and help you locate a church home.  Most churches have a vision statement, core beliefs, and organizational documents that you may want to ask for to gain a better understanding of who they are, how they function, and what they believe to be true in regards to God’s word.  That will help you narrow things down.

Once you have a short list, start visiting those churches.  Talk with some members of their congregations, attend some of their classes, and speak with their pastor and other staff members.  And keep praying for God’s guidance and wisdom in finding the right church home for you and your family.

Finally, as you grow in your faith and develop your personal relationship with Jesus there are some spiritual disciplines that you need to incorporate into your new lifestyle.  I have touched on several of them already:

Prayer and Daily Quiet Time to speak and listen to God.

Church Attendance, Worship, and Fellowship to help us praise God together as part of His Bride and Body of Christ and to grow and become stronger in our faith.

Daily Bible Reading and Study time so that we increase our knowledge and know God.

Scripture Memorization to hide God’s word and His promises in our hearts and to renew our minds.

Serving Others in the name of Jesus to bring glory to Him.

The blessings that come with accepting Jesus as our Savior are uncountable and different from what the world defines as success.  One of the biggest blessings that I have personally experienced is God’s peace in my life.  Knowing that God loves me and is in control of my life gives me such a tremendous sense of peace.  The promises that God gives us in His Word also bring great peace to my heart.

I hope that you will ask the deep questions about life and educate yourself to see that this life isn’t all there is.  We do exist after these bodies die, and God is calling you to come to Him so that you will be with Him forever and ever.

God has more for you.  God loves you and wants you to be with Him.  Jesus suffered and died to pay for your sins.  Don’t you want to know why and what that was all about?  God’s Word is true and eternal.  God never changes; He is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Seek Him.  Find Him.  Tell someone about Him.  Be encouraged.  Press on.
