I have received an inheritance from another family that took me by surprise. It was completely unexpected and such a tremendous blessing. An inheritance that has changed my life.
I didn’t belong to them, yet they adopted me.
I have never really thought about the fact that I am adopted. I wasn’t born with these privileges. They shouldn’t be mine. But because of His love, they are.
You see, I was born into death. I didn’t know it, but it is truth.
Yet my creator loves me enough to rescue me at great cost to Himself. Actually, He willingly gave Himself up as a sacrifice so that I could be adopted into His family. And then to top it all off, He gave me His inheritance. He changed places with me. He entered into death so that I could enter into life. He became my brother. He introduced me to my Father. I was adopted.
I am a follower of Jesus Christ. He is my Lord and my Savior. God’s word says that I have received an inheritance that will last for eternity. I am a child of God, Jesus is my brother. I am a member of God’s family. Death has lost its sting.
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. (John 1:12-13 ESV)
But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. (Titus 3:4-7 ESV)
So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. (Romans 8:12-17 ESV)
May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (Colossians 1:11-14 ESV)
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. (Galatians 4:4-7 ESV)
I am no longer a slave to my sin. I am a child of God. I have been redeemed. It has made all the difference.
