I am so grateful to have such a wonderful group of women to call my friends who love the Lord and know His word. We learn from one another all the time as iron sharpens iron. We recently had a conversation about sections of scripture that say that we are God’s chosen people – selected before the time began. One learned sister in Christ reminded us how God is timeless. He knows the end of time. He knows who will respond to His call and who will walk away.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.(Ephesians 1:3-6 ESV)
though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God’s purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls— (Romans 9:11 ESV)
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.(Romans 8:28-30 ESV)
It seems to me that humility of spirit is required in order for us to respond to God’s call; maybe even for us to receive God’s call. Over and over in scripture we are warned against pride and are given example after example of how the prideful are laid low and the humble are lifted up by God.
When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom. (Proverbs 11:2 ESV)
Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. (1 Peter 5:5-7 ESV)
Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. (Matthew 23:12 ESV)
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. (James 4:10 ESV)
Doesn’t that just blow your mind? That before time began, God knew you and what you would choose.
It is a great and mighty God that we serve.
Lord, help me to remain humble. Reveal the areas in my life that I walk in pride so that I may surrender them to You and allow Your Holy Spirit to change my heart. Enable me to humble myself and bring glory to You Lord Jesus. Thank You God for being timeless. Amen.
Choose this day whom you will serve.
Be encouraged. Stay humble. Press on.
