God in Our Trials

Right now I have many people in my life who are walking through various trials of life.  Military deployment of spouses, work that consumes life and separates you from your loved ones, children who are willfully walking a path of destruction, friends and family members going through chemo treatments, others in financial distress.   So many people around us are going through trials.  We all will face them in this life.  God has purpose in what He allows.  His purpose is to shape our character into the likeness of His son Jesus Christ.

God walks with us through these trials of life, giving us comfort and showing us what it is that He desires for us to address in our lives.  The intensity and duration of the trial are in His hands.  We must learn to trust Him in the midst of it all and share the lessons we’ve learned through the trials with others who are facing similar circumstances.

Often our first desire is to run from or escape from the pain and difficulty of life’s trials.  In so doing we are avoiding the lessons that God would have us learn.  We are not allowing Him to shape our character.

Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good. (1 Peter 4:19 ESV)

Entrusting our souls to God while doing good in the midst of our suffering.  This seems like a tall order.

My Help Comes from the Lord

A Song of Ascents.

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.(Psalm 121 ESV)

He alone is worthy of our praise.  He alone can breathe life into our dead bones.  He alone gives us a hope and a future.  It is interesting that Psalm 121 is a song of ascents.  A song that the pilgrims would sing as they walked up the mountainside toward Jerusalem.  They were forced to lift their eyes to their destination that was above them.  They looked to the Lord as they walked toward the Holy City.

So in the midst of your trials, lift your eyes to the Lord and off of your circumstances.

Eyes on the Father, my sisters and brothers!

Let us trust God fully with our circumstances, knowing that He has purpose in our pain and in the pain that others walk through.  Trust Him that He is working all things for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purposes.  God is good all the time, and all the time God is good.  Seek His wisdom for your life.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. (James 1:5 ESV)

Be an encouragement to someone walking through a trial.  Point them to Jesus and help them focus their eyes on Him.  Do good in the midst of your suffering.  Count your many blessings that all come from the hands of our Lord.

Be encouraged.  Press on.

James 1.12
