Listening to the voice of God, allowing Him to speak to my soul, recognizing His voice over all the other feelings and desires, takes practiced, repetitive, silence. There is so much in life that distracts us. We are so easily drawn away from His presence. It is when I am seeking Him and listening for Him that I will find Him.
I was blessed this morning on my walk. I walked over 7 miles – more than 2 hours and was able to listen to a couple of different pastors’ sermons. Their words affirmed in my spirit what God has been drawing me to do. They affirmed the vital importance of obedience to even the smallest call of God on our lives.
What if Peter hadn’t taken Jesus out in his boat to preach to the crowd?
What if Joseph had divorced Mary?
What if I had slept in today?
But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king’s food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself. (Daniel 1:8 ESV)
As for these four youths, God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom, and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.(Daniel 1:17 ESV)
Our obedience not only brings blessings to us, but it always blesses others around us. I was reminded that often what God is asking of us makes no sense. It sounds and seems crazy. It is in these very situations where He displays His great power in our lives. Quit your job? Really? Go on a 500 mile long pilgrimage? Really? Start a blog? Really?
I don’t see all of His reasoning for the calls He has placed on my life, but I trust Him enough to step into them daily, leaving the results in His hands.
One sermon pointed out that the reasons Christians don’t walk in a deeper more fulfilling relationship with God is that they don’t read His word and they don’t obey it when they do read it. Our relationship with Jesus begins to blossom when we seek Him – to know Him more – by reading God’s word. It goes even deeper when we desire to please Him out of love which leads us to obedience of God’s word. This obedience, in turn, increases our faith.
Daniel answered the king and said, “No wise men, enchanters, magicians, or astrologers can show to the king the mystery that the king has asked, but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the latter days. Daniel 2:27-28
I hope today you’ll make some time to sit quietly with God. That you will read His Holy Word and obey His call on your life no matter how small or how crazy it may seem. He will reveal more and more to you and your faith will grow as a result.
Read your Bible. Obey God’s call. Share it with everyone around you. Give glory to Him alone.
Be encouraged. Press on.
