As we go through our day, in whatever secular environment we find ourselves, are we walking with God? Are we in the world and not of the world? Are we set apart and holy – even at work? Are we humble?
I have two beautiful daughters who are intelligent and talented. (I promise I won’t overdo the proud mama thing for too much longer.) Their abilities have landed this fanny in a seat at the High School Awards Night for 7 of the last 9 years. (two years in the middle where neither was at the High School) Last night was one of those nights. It is great to watch not only our children but the area children receive recognition for their abilities. They work hard. They are great students. They are the future of our nation – our world.
Honor and recognition can sometimes go to one’s head. It can puff us up and skew our right perspective of ourselves before God. Knowing and remembering who we are in Jesus Christ prevents us from sliding too far down the value scale and also prevents us from climbing too far up it.
All of our abilities are grace from God. Knowing that, but for the grace of God, I am no different from the mother in India who is struggling to feed her children, or the prostitute downtown whose parents neglected and abused her from the beginning. This knowledge develops a compassion for others and gratitude toward God.
Having a humble and grateful heart toward God is our right position. He will lift us up at the proper time.
He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:1-2
Our Lord Jesus prayed for us in part….
I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth. John 17:14-19
So today, as you enter the world, set yourself apart from it, holy and righteous before God with a humble and grateful heart, and do good to others. Give all glory to God in heaven. Shine the light of Jesus. Know that you are dearly loved.
Be encouraged. Press on.
