The year is 2114. The earth has been ravaged by wars, earthquakes, natural disasters, famines, politics, moral decline and violence. All but 1% of the population lives in abject poverty. There is little hope, little love and very little reason to try to succeed in life. Daily life is simply about surviving until tomorrow. What we know today as the arts has been completely abandoned. Libraries were burned, satellites destroyed, university closed, the internet imploded with viruses and theft. Most of the earth’s natural resources have been consumed and the natural environment has become poisonous. Medical care is almost impossible to find. Democracy was crushed years ago. There are a few world powers who continue to battle for ultimate world authority destroying entire populations in their wake.
This is the world of your great-great grandchildren. They have only heard about Jesus Christ because of the legacy you left behind. Did you do enough? Did you say enough? Did your life resemble Jesus enough for them to follow after you seeking Him?
Your alarm clock jerks you out of this nightmare. You hit the off switch and sit up still shaken, trying to process the grief that feels so real. The suffering of your children’s children shook you to your core. You’ve been given a precious glimpse into the future life of your family, and you know you have a choice to make. What are you going to leave behind and how are you going to live the rest of your life to help them find Jesus? He is their only hope.
This isn’t just a story. It isn’t just a nightmare. Read your Bible – it is God’s word to us. We are called to live like Jesus because in so doing, we lead future generations to believe in Him, to seek Him and to know Him. We can get lost in the daily-ness of this life and lose sight of the ticking clock and the Kingdom’s purpose for our life. Our life on earth is just a breath in eternity. This is our one chance to tell others about Jesus, and to follow Him ourselves, so that they will seek after Him. He is the only way to gain eternal life in heaven with God. The only way.
What if your great-great grandchildren only have you, your life, for their Bible? What if someone were to write a biography of your life. Would it include chapters of faith? Will it tell them about God’s truth so they will know Jesus Christ as their salvation? Are you raising your children and grandchildren to live a life that will pass on Jesus Christ to future generations of your family? Do your family traditions pass on your culture or your Christ? Is your house filled with the love of Jesus Christ or a love of the world? Do you study the Bible and talk about it with your children, or would you rather watch TV and relax when you get home? What legacy are you leaving for them? Trinkets, furniture, inheritance, land, or Jesus?
Your time here is short. None of us is promised tomorrow. Choose this day whom you will serve. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. The master will be returning soon. How have you invested His resources? Have you gotten a good return? Will you be able to hear, “Well done good and faithful servant.”?
WAKE UP! Jesus is calling to you. “Come and follow me. I will make you fishers of men.”
Seek Him. Walk in His ways. Show them Jesus – He is their salvation. Tell of His wonderful greatness.
You are leaving a legacy, you just need to decide what kind of legacy you’d like them to inherit.
Be encouraged. Press on.
