One of satan’s oldest methods…in use from the very beginning. Did He really say that? Lord help us. Remove the scales from our eyes.
…let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
(Can I just say that after being woken up by God at 3am, not allowed to go back to sleep, writing for quite a while, emailing for guidance, being called out of my shower, wet hair and all, and being affirmed by KLOVE’s verse of the day – James 1:19, life with God’s Spirit is very unpredictable and not very convenient! When He prompts you, stop and obey.)
We have such hot buttons in our society. The conservative Christian stance is increasingly assumed to be hate speech. I wonder, if Jesus were to live in our society, how quickly we’d scream, “Crucify him!”
Phil Robertson is not Jesus. He is trying, as all true Christians strive to do, to live for Him, and I for one am encouraged by such men. Putting yourself out on public display (and your family) in order to spread the message of God, only to be persecuted because you didn’t say what God has asked you to stand for quite the way that everybody wanted to hear it, THAT is what true followers of Christ do. There is a cost to following Jesus. Brothers and sisters of the faith, we must not only support those who are stepping out in faith, but we must do the same. Fear God, not man.
2 Timothy 4:3-4
For the time is coming (and is here AMEN) when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
You must decide for yourself if Phil’s recent comments line up with scripture and if what, and how, he stated his opinion about homosexuality truly reflects what is in God’s holy word. We must also consider that our media has a tendency to pick and choose what is said to fit their agendas. We weren’t there. We didn’t hear the entire conversation, tone of voice, or context.
One Christian blog post that I read, assumed that Phil was speaking with disdain or even hatred toward homosexuals. I don’t believe that to be the case. I don’t personally know Phil (and I assume this blogger doesn’t either), and I won’t put words in Phil’s mouth.
Sin, when defined as doing that which is contrary to God’s will, is illogical. God loves each of us and wants what is best for us so why would we ever choose to do something contrary to His will? That would be illogical, but we do it all the time. We are sinners. And God’s holy word warns us of the folly of sin as it encourages us to strive toward holiness and righteousness, taking off our sinful nature and putting on our new self in Christ Jesus. Here are a few scripture references that apply to Phil’s comments. I encourage you to read more than the excerpts found here.
Leviticus 18:22 (A verse in a long list of the sexually immoral – including bestiality.)
You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.
- something horrible: an object of intense disapproval or dislike
- something shameful: something that is immoral, disgusting, or shameful
- intense dislike: a feeling of intense dislike or disapproval toward somebody or something
Romans 1:24-27 (previous verses are also important v 18+)
Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
1 Corinthains 6:9-11
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.
…the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith.
When Jesus was here in the flesh, he spoke the truth with love. Sometimes that required words that stung. When God reveals our sin to us, it is painful. But the most loving thing He can do for us is to show us where we are walking contrary to His will. Jesus always addressed the sin in people’s lives – always. As Christians, we are to lovingly do the same.
When we twist and disregard God’s word to fit our own agenda we are sinning. When we choose to live contrary to God’s word knowingly, we are in dangerous territory and should be in great fear of God’s wrath. We, as believers, must place ourselves in submission to God’s word in its entirety, even when we do not completely understand it. Seek godly counsel, study, ask God to show you His truth through the power of His Holy Spirit and He will do so. We are to confess and repent of our sins and seek to walk in God’s ways not our own.
To see a brother or sister walking in sin and say nothing is not love. It is tolerance and enabling and God will hold us accountable for their sin when we do not speak up – especially for the sin in the lives of our children and in the lives of other believers. (Read about Eli and his sons in 1 Samuel 2.)
If I say to the wicked, O wicked one, you shall surely die, and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way, that wicked person shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand. But if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, that person shall die in his iniquity, but you will have delivered your soul.
I pray that God’s grace is sufficient for Phil Robertson and for all those who disagree with his statements. I pray for those who, with wicked intent, twist words to suit their own evil agendas. I pray for those who don’t believe in the one true God. I pray that my own heart remains humble, meek, and teachable before my Lord Jesus. I hope that we will be able to hold a loving discussion about God’s Holy Word that results in changed lives, revealed truth and victory for Jesus. We are all sinners in need of a savior. We all have limited understanding, none of us has it all figured out. His mercies are new every morning.
Lord, help us to see the truth. Help us to walk in Your truth with love and grace for ourselves and for all those around us. Help us to be quick to listen and slow to speak and to become angry. Your word states that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus! Fill us with Your Holy Spirit and enable us to speak boldly for You. Give us the strength to step out in faith and publicly proclaim Your Word and Your love and to endure the persecution that will come. Amen.
