I love to be out on the water. There is just something about the peaceful nature of a gently flowing stream. Something about waves washing in on shore. Something about the beauty of a lake. Man even searches for signs of water on distant planets. Water is thirst quenching and life sustaining. Water is cleansing. Water will flow down to the lowest point – the deepest point – and then level off.
John 4:14 The water that Jesus gives us becomes in us a spring of water welling up to eternal life.
Proverbs 18:4 The words of a man’s mouth are a deep waters; the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook.
John 7:38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” (The Holy Spirit)
God’s Holy Spirit living in us, in our hearts, produces rivers of living water – a spring of water welling up to eternal life. The epitome of thirst quenching, life giving, cleansing.
Have you ever encountered a mature Christian who seemed to breathe life into those around them by their wisdom, their love, their grace, and their love for Jesus Christ? They are so refreshing to spend time with. It is like being out on the water. Good medicine for our souls. As God works in us, as the Holy Spirit is submitted to daily, our hearts are changed and over time they become, as God’s Word declares, rivers of living water. God’s Holy Spirit bearing fruit through Christians to strengthen and encourage other believers and to bring glory to God the Father.
Yesterday we experienced the Holy Spirit working through our congregation as we worshipped God. It is always an amazing, awakening, love-filled experience. You could just look around and see the joy of the Lord on people’s faces. We long to stay in that place. One day we’ll pass from this world into an eternity with God. But for now, I pray that God will make rivers of living water pour forth from my heart.
Be encouraged. Press on.
