Words of Seasoning

Words are one of the many graces God has used in my life.  My words specifically.  It is amazing what words can do.  They can bring trouble, lift spirits, encourage hearts, wound hearts, display my character, show my ignorance, cause laughter, express my heart, seek truth, praise God, lift others in prayer, answer questions, ask questions, etc., etc.  Scripture speaks to the use of our tongues:

James 3:6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

My words set on fire by hell?  My tongue a world of evil, corrupting my whole being?  Until submitted to God – yes.

James 3:17 & 18  But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.

Colossians 4:6  Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

Yet wise words are life lifting – peace making.  God’s words are life giving, soul soothing, light unto the darkness.  I praise Him for the Living Word and am thankful for all those who have come before who have sacrificed so that we can freely read the truth; we can study and understand, with God’s help, to have faith and believe that Jesus is God’s son sent to die to save us from our sins to be reconciled to God and gain eternal life in heaven.

Lord, guard our tongues.  Help us to use words that give life and draw others closer to You.  Amen.
